An Historical Review of Pemberton Valley Seniors

ARTICLE prepared by Dorthy Winfry

1988

In 1988 the Lions Villa was built and in 1989 the residents formed a Senior Wellness group. Their first president was Sally Gimse and Marilyn McIvor was the person to look after their health at that time.

Babs and Lorne Fersell did the Senior Link paper.

Phyllis Chandler (Linda Chandler's mother) was the person to go after grants for furniture, TV, games, tables, chairs, copier, etc. Their membership totaled 25, the meetings, dinners, and celebrations were held at the Common Room at the Villas.

D'Arcy also formed a senior group and Pat Ferguson was their first president and they use to have competitions between the two groups. They met together once in a while for lunches.

They took many trips some for as many as three days on over night trips to Vancouver and Victoria; like Harrison Hot Springs, Vancouver to see the fireworks, the capital in Victoria etc.

2000

Dr. Fisher and Anita Samuels started the exercise at the Medical Centre, equipment was purchased and some of it is in use today at the Lions trailer. As people aged and passed away the group came apart in 2000.

2004

In 2004 another group of seniors decided to start up again and in March 9, 2005 they became a Society. We are now known as the Pemberton Valley Seniors Society and have a membership of, 53 and growing. There is quite a group of 10 that have joined from D'Arcy and they come down on Wednesdays to join in on our activities.

The purpose of the Society is to keep us healthy and to age in place, to socialize, exchange ideas and recipes as well as play games and exercise twice weekly with the proper equipment and guidance.

We have had many grants that we have applied for come through ergo, our ElderGo Bus pilot project. This made it possible to bring the D'Arcy people (FREE) to Pemberton every Wednesday for meetings or appointments as well as shopping at home, also to take some trips.

We also publish a News-Link every other month to keep everybody in touch. RE/Max Sea to Sky Real Estate Whistler is our sponsor and with the help of Betty-Lou Nelson one of our local realtors, she sees that it gets printed for us. We also want to mention that the Lions Club supports us by letting us use their trailer for FREE and the Common Room when we need it.
